Every year ArtVilnius has a certain theme – a highlight – and this year’s theme is performativity.
The context of the art fair will provide an opportunity to look at the concept of performativity in an open and creative way, to talk about performativity and the broadest interpretations of this term.
The organizers of ArtVilnius’23 emphasize that the theme of performativity is only a suggestion for galleries to contribute to the development of the fair’s theme; all media are traditionally welcome at the fair: painting, printmaking, drawings, sculpture, video art, photography, installations, etc.
EXHIBITION TAKAS (THE PATH)
Individual artists can participate in the annual exhibition of sculpture performances and installations TAKAS (The Path) with their project.
Takas is a curated competition exhibition in which works are selected from the submitted applications by the curator of TAKAS.
Only works of art in the category of sculptures, installations and performances can participate in the exhibition TAKAS.
All works selected for the ArtVilnius’23 exhibition TAKAS are sold during the fair.
Artists must submit their CV with the application.
The curator of the annual exhibition of sculpture performances and installations TAKAS (The Path) is Vytenis Burokas.
Vytenis Burokas is an artist, curator, lecturer, graduate of bachelor’s, master’s, and art pedagogy studies in Contemporary Sculpture at Vilnius Academy of Arts, participant of Rupert’s Alternative Education Programme in 2013-2014, and has been curating the ArtVilnius exhibition Takas for three years now. V. Burokas has worked as a curator of education and exhibitions at the National Gallery of Art and is currently the head of the Department of Sculpture at the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
The theme of this year’s ArtVilnius’23 fair is Performativity.
We hope to receive applications from sculptors, interdisciplinary artists, and performance artists with proposals that reflect this notion of performativity.
We would also like to see works that make the process itself and the self-actualization of the material an integral part of the process – such works might also reveal how ideas and concepts materialize in the creative process, in which the material becomes an active participant/subject of the exchange, rather than just passively absorbing the content that is projected by language.
Such a relationship is not unidirectional (e.g., artist à material à work), thus projecting the creative act and content onto the passive material, but dynamic and reciprocal, with language already spreading after the encounter with the phenomenon in the process of familiarization.
We often hear that language has become dominant and that everything is language, so we rarely listen to materials and materiality itself. We encourage applications reflecting on these connections.
