ARTVILNIUS'22

INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY ART FAIR ARTVILNIUS’22

The 13 edition of ArtVilnius’22 was held in the Exhibition and Congress Centre Litexpo on 7-9 October 2022.  The theme of the Fair was ecology, with a special focus on the genres of installation and sculpture. The guest of the fair was Ukraine, whose artists’ works will be presented in various segments of the programme.

ArtVilnius’22 featured 70 art galleries and institutions and 320 artists from 18 countries. Besides the main gallery programme, ArtVilnius set up an annual Project Zone, where art institutions and renowned individual artists from Lithuania and other countries presented projects and exhibitions created exclusively for the Fair (curator Valentinas Klimašauskas). The Fair also hosted the international sculpture, installation and performance exhibition The Path (curated by Vytenis Burokas) with 28 individual artists projects. An international jury of art professionals and visitors selected the best galleries, artists, and individual works presented at the Fair.

9 October, Sunday

2.00–13.00

What (Else) Can Be Done? A Conversation on Art, Ecology, Disinformation and More in the Context of the Russian War in Ukraine.

Among many other things, the Russian aggression into Ukraine also revealed how culture, ecology, economy, disinformation, and other sociopolitical realities are intertwined. In this context, the questions that are more or less loudly raised are what can art institutions (from artists and curators to museums and audiences) do to help Ukraine succeed in this war? Are the muses silent during the war? How should we behave regarding the contemporary Russian art world – should we cancel it, postpone it, help, or? Should – and if yes, how – the art world immerse and participate in the ongoing wars of (dis)information?

Participants: curator of the ArtVilnius’22 project area Valentinas Klimašauskas; Ukrainian art curator and researcher in visual studies Lesia Kulchinska; Ukrainian art critic living in Lithuania, lecturer at Vilnius Academy of Arts and the European Humanities University, Valentyn Odnoviun; artist and writer Olia Sosnovskaya, living between Minsk and Vienna.
